How to Write an Experienced Professional Resume

How to write a resume when you have several years of work: what to lead with, what to cut, how long it should be, with a sample.

An experienced professional resume with a summary and job achievements

When you have several years of work, the problem changes. You no longer need to find things to write. You need to decide what to leave out. A good experienced resume is not a list of everything you have done. It shows the results that matter for the job you want next. If you are earlier in your career, read the fresher resume guide instead.

One page or two?

Up to about ten years of experience usually fits on one page. If you have more, or a long list of relevant results, two pages is fine. Do not go past two. If the second page is only a few lines, tighten the first page instead.

Put your newest job first

List jobs from newest to oldest. Give your latest roles the most space and your oldest roles a line or two. A job from fifteen years ago rarely needs more than a title, a company and the dates.

Write results, not duties

"Responsible for the sales team" says what the job was. "Led a team of five and raised monthly sales by about a fifth over a year" says what you did. Use numbers only when you can stand behind them, and drop the bullet if you cannot say how you know.

  • Start each bullet with a verb: led, built, cut, trained, launched.
  • Say what changed because of you: faster, cheaper, bigger, safer.
  • Keep each bullet to one or two lines.
  • Three to five bullets for recent jobs. One or two for old ones.

Use the summary to say what you do

Three lines at most. State your field, your years of experience and the kind of work you do best. For example: "Operations manager with nine years in retail logistics. Strong at cutting delivery delays and managing small teams."

Gaps and job changes

If there is a gap, list the dates honestly and say briefly what you did, such as study, caring for family or freelance work. Several short jobs in a row can be grouped, for example "Freelance projects, 2021 to 2023", with two lines about the kind of work.

Example (made up, for illustration only)

This is an invented sample, not a real person.

  • Name and title: Sample Name, Operations Manager
  • Summary: Operations manager with nine years in retail logistics. Strong at cutting delivery delays and managing small teams.
  • Current job: Operations Manager, Sample Retail Ltd, 2021 to present. Led a team of eight across two warehouses. Cut average delivery time from four days to three by changing the packing order. Trained six new staff.
  • Previous job: Logistics Coordinator, Sample Distribution, 2018 to 2021. Planned daily routes for twelve drivers. Reduced missed deliveries by moving to a shared tracking sheet.
  • Earlier job: Store Assistant, Sample Mart, 2016 to 2018.
  • Education: BBA, Sample University, 2016.
  • Skills: route planning, stock control, team leadership, Excel.

Building it in the Resume Builder

Open the Resume Builder, replace the sample details and write your summary. On the Experience tab, add each job and its bullets, newest first. Group your skills on the Skills tab. If the resume is two pages, the browser carries it over when you print. Choose the Classic, Minimal or Executive template, check the preview, and save it as a PDF. No sign-up, no watermark. The Resume Builder guide covers each tab.

Common mistakes

  • Listing duties instead of results.
  • Giving a ten-year-old job as much space as the current one.
  • Skills lists with thirty items.
  • Using the same resume for every role without changing the summary.
  • Dates that do not match what your referee will say.

Questions and answers

How far back should I go?

Detail the last ten years or so. Older roles can be a line each, or left out if they do not help the job you want.

Should I put every job on my resume?

No. Include the jobs that support your next application. If leaving a job out creates a confusing gap, mention it in one short line.

Can the builder make a two-page resume?

Yes. The print layout carries the content onto a second page when it is too long for one. Check the preview and the print window before you save the PDF.

Is my work history saved by the tool?

No. Nothing is sent to a server and nothing is saved. Keep your text in a note, and save the PDF before you close the tab.
