How PDF and Word compression works

PDF and Word files can contain text, images, fonts, metadata, thumbnails, and package data. This tool gives you two practical compression choices: a safer layout-preserving pass and a stronger pass for smaller sharing copies.

Preserve Layout tries to keep the document usable in the same way as the original. Strong Compression may reduce file size more, but it can simplify the file: PDFs are flattened into page images, and DOCX files become clean text-only Word files.

What to check before sending

Always open the compressed file once before sending it to a client, teacher, office, or printer. Some already-optimized PDFs and DOCX files may not become smaller with a safe browser-only pass.

If a PDF contains selectable text, forms, links, or vector artwork, use Preserve Layout first. If the file only needs to be viewed or emailed, Strong Compression can be useful because it creates a compact visual copy.

This PDF and Word compressor reduces the size of a PDF or DOCX file and gives you a smaller copy to download. You choose between a safe mode that keeps the layout and a strong mode that shrinks the file more by simplifying it. It helps when an email, upload form or portal rejects a file because it is too large.

How to use it

Drop a PDF or DOCX file onto the box, or click to browse.
Choose a mode: Preserve Layout or Strong Compression.
For a PDF in Strong mode, set the JPEG quality (35–92%, default 72%) and the Page render scale: Small file, Balanced or Sharper pages.
Click Compress File. The Result panel shows the original size, compressed size and percent saved.
Click Download Compressed File. The file is named yourfile_compressed.pdf or .docx.

How it works

File	Preserve Layout	Strong Compression
PDF	Re-saves the PDF with object streams. Text, links and images are kept.	Renders each page to a JPEG image and builds a new PDF from them.
DOCX	Rebuilds the DOCX package without changing its content.	Extracts the plain text and creates a new, text-only DOCX.

All processing runs in your browser with JavaScript libraries; your document is not uploaded to a server. The last 10 results (file name, mode and sizes, not the file itself) are listed under Recent using your browser's local storage, and you can clear them.

Before you send the file

Strong mode for PDF makes a picture copy: text can no longer be selected or searched, and links and forms are removed.
Strong mode for DOCX removes images, tables, comments, embedded objects and complex formatting.
Files that are already optimised may not shrink. The tool tells you when the output is not smaller.
Old .doc files are not supported. Save them as DOCX in Word first.
Always open the compressed copy once to check it before sharing.

Is my file uploaded to a server?

No. The PDF or DOCX is read and compressed in your browser, and the download is created on your device.

Which mode gives the smallest file?

Strong Compression usually does, especially for scanned or image-heavy PDFs. Lower the JPEG quality or pick Small file to shrink it further, at the cost of sharpness.

Why did my Word file barely get smaller?

Preserve Layout keeps the DOCX content as it is, so savings are often small. For a much smaller file, use Strong Compression if you only need the text.
