About this tool

Roll dice or flip a coin online

This dice roller rolls virtual dice and flips a coin in one place. Use it for board games, tabletop role-playing games, classroom activities or any quick random decision when you do not have real dice or a coin to hand.

How to use it

  1. Choose Roll Dice or Flip Coin.
  2. For dice, pick a type: d4, d6, d8, d10, d12, d20 or d100.
  3. Use the slider to set the number of dice, from 1 to 10.
  4. Click Roll (for example “Roll 2d6”) to see each die and the total, or click Flip Coin for Heads or Tails.
  5. Check Recent Rolls for your last 10 results.

How the rolls are made

Each die and each coin flip uses your browser's cryptographic random number generator (crypto.getRandomValues) rather than the basic Math.random. A die with N sides returns a whole number from 1 to N, so a d10 gives 1–10 and a d100 gives 1–100. With several dice, the total is the sum of all the dice.

Example: rolling 2d6 can give any total from 2 to 12. A total of 7 is the most likely, because 6 of the 36 possible combinations add up to 7 (1+6, 2+5, 3+4, 4+3, 5+2, 6+1).

Dice types at a glance

DieRangeAverage rollCommon use
d41–42.5Small damage rolls
d61–63.5Board games

d121–126.5Large damage rolls
d201–2010.5Attack rolls and checks in tabletop RPGs
d1001–10050.5Percentage chances

The average of one die is (sides + 1) ÷ 2. For several dice, multiply by the number of dice: 3d6 averages 10.5.
