Play the FLAMES name game

This FLAMES calculator runs the classic playground name game for two names and shows every step. FLAMES stands for Friends, Love, Affection, Marriage, Enemies, Soulmates. It is a game of chance based on spelling — it says nothing real about how two people get along, so treat the result as a bit of fun.

How to use it

1. Type the first name.
2. Type the second name.
3. The result appears straight away, with the remaining letters, a meaning guide and each elimination step.

How the game works

1. Both names are lower-cased and everything except the letters a–z is dropped (spaces, numbers, punctuation, emoji and accented or non-Latin letters).
2. Common letters are crossed out in pairs. A letter that appears twice in one name and once in the other is crossed out only once.
3. The letters left over in both names are counted.
4. Count around F-L-A-M-E-S using that number. The letter you land on is removed, and counting restarts from the next letter.
5. Repeat until one letter remains. If every letter cancels out (count 0), the tool shows Soulmates.

Worked example

Rahul and Priya: the shared letters r and a cancel, leaving h, u, l and p, i, y — a count of 6.

The last letter is M = Marriage.

Frequently asked questions

Is the FLAMES result accurate?

No. It only depends on how many letters the names share, so changing a nickname or adding a surname changes the answer. Play it for laughs, not for decisions.

Why does S mean Soulmates here?

Different regions play different versions; some use S for Sister. This tool uses Soulmates.

Should I use full names or first names?

Either works, as long as you use the same style for both people. Spaces are ignored.
