About this tool

Spell any text with the NATO phonetic alphabet

This NATO phonetic converter turns each letter you type into its code word, so "Hi" becomes Hotel – India. Use it to spell names, booking codes, email addresses or serial numbers clearly over the phone or radio. The result updates as you type, and it runs fully in your browser.

How to use it

  1. Type or paste your text into the Text box. It starts with "Hello World" as an example.
  2. Read the cards below. Each card shows one character and its code word.
  3. Use the line under the cards for the full spelling, with words separated by dashes.
  4. Click Copy to copy that line.

How it works

The tool reads your text one character at a time and looks it up in a fixed list. Upper and lower case give the same word. Letters A to Z use the familiar code words, from Alpha, Bravo and Charlie to X-ray, Yankee and Zulu. Digits are spelled as plain English words, Zero to Nine.

A few symbols also have names:

CharacterOutput
.Full Stop
,Comma
?Question Mark
!Exclamation
-Dash
/Slash
@At
space(space)

Any other character, such as an accented letter, # or &, is shown as it is, in grey. In the card view a space appears as a small gap. In the copied text it appears as "(space)".

Tips

  • When reading an email address aloud, the tool spells "@" as "At" and "." as "Full Stop".
  • The tool uses the common English spellings Alpha and Juliet. The official ICAO list writes them as Alfa and Juliett so speakers of other languages say them correctly.
  • Aviation radio often says "Niner" for 9 and "Tree" for 3. This tool uses the normal number words.
