Write any number in words
This number to words converter spells out a number in plain English, for example 1234567 becomes one million, two hundred thirty-four thousand, five hundred sixty-seven. It is handy for cheques, invoices, contracts and school work where an amount must be written in words.
How to use it
- Choose Plain Text or Currency (Dollars).
- Type a number into the box. The words update as you type.
- Click Copy to copy the result.
How it works
The number is split into groups of three digits from the right. Each group is written in words (one to nine hundred ninety-nine) and given its scale name: thousand, million, billion or trillion. Groups are joined with commas, and tens and units are joined with a hyphen, as in forty-two.
Decimals are written as a fraction of 100, which is the usual style on cheques. In Currency mode the word dollars is added at the end.
Example: 1250.75 in Currency mode becomes one thousand, two hundred fifty and seventy-five/100 dollars.
Supported range and limits
| Item | What the tool does |
|---|---|
| Largest number | 999,999,999,999,999 (just under one quadrillion) |
| Scale words | thousand, million, billion, trillion (short scale, not lakh or crore) |
| Decimals | First two decimal places, shown as xx/100 |
| Negative whole numbers | Prefixed with negative |
| Currency | Dollars only |
| Language | English only |
The style is American: no "and" between hundreds and tens, so 101 is one hundred one. The result is shown with each word capitalised, but the copied text is lower case.
Frequently asked questions
How do I write 100 in words?
100 is written one hundred. In Currency mode it becomes one hundred dollars.
Can I use it for rupees, dirhams or other currencies?
Currency mode always adds "dollars". For other currencies use Plain Text mode and add the currency name yourself. Note that the tool uses million and billion, not lakh and crore.
How are cents written?
Cents are written as a fraction, for example 45.10 becomes forty-five and ten/100. Only two decimal places are used, so enter amounts rounded to the cent.
