About this tool

Estimate your electricity bill by appliance

This electricity bill calculator estimates how much your appliances cost to run each month. You list each appliance with its wattage, daily hours and quantity, enter the price you pay per kWh, and the tool totals the energy use and cost.

It does not include any country's or utility's tariff. There are no price slabs, fixed charges, taxes or time-of-use rates. One flat rate per kWh, which you enter, is applied to all usage.

How to use it

  1. Choose a currency symbol ($, €, £, ₹, AED or SAR) and enter your rate per kWh.
  2. Add appliances with + Add Appliance, or use the quick-add buttons for common items such as an LED bulb, ceiling fan, refrigerator or 1-ton air conditioner.
  3. Edit the watts, hours per day and quantity for each row.
  4. Read the daily and monthly kWh, the monthly bill and the annual estimate. Click Copy summary to copy a text breakdown.

Formula

kWh per day = watts × hours per day × quantity ÷ 1000

Monthly cost = kWh per day × 30 × rate per kWh

The annual estimate is the monthly cost × 12.

Example: a 1,000 W air conditioner used 8 hours a day uses 1000 × 8 ÷ 1000 = 8 kWh per day. Over 30 days that is 240 kWh. At 0.12 per kWh, it costs 28.80 per month.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my real bill different?

Fridges and air conditioners cycle on and off, so they rarely draw full power all day. Real bills also add fixed charges, taxes and tiered prices that this tool does not include.

Where do I find my rate per kWh?

It is printed on your electricity bill. If your utility uses price slabs, divide your energy charge by the kWh you used to get an average rate.
