A simple countdown timer you can pause and resume
This countdown timer counts down from a time you set in hours, minutes and seconds, and lets you stop, resume, end or reset it at any point. It is built for focus sessions, study blocks, short breaks and timed tasks. The timer starts at 25 minutes by default, and a small log keeps your recent sessions so you can see how much time you have tracked.
How to use it
- Type the length into the Hours, Minutes and Seconds boxes. Each box takes up to two digits.
- Click Start. The clock shows the time left as
HH:MM:SS, and the ring fills as time passes. - Click Stop to pause, then Resume to carry on from the same point.
- Click End to finish early. The time you actually used is saved to Recent Sessions.
- Click Reset countdown to load the length from the boxes again and start over.
How it works
The timer runs in your browser and ticks down once per second. The time boxes are locked while it runs, so you cannot change the length by accident. When it reaches zero, the status changes to Finished and the full length is added to your session log. If you end a session early, it is logged as Ended with the elapsed time only.
The panel at the top shows four numbers: the current status, the percent elapsed, how many sessions finished, and the total time tracked across the saved sessions. The Quick Stats box also shows the configured length, your last session and how many sessions are saved.
Your settings and the last 8 sessions are stored in your browser's local storage. Nothing is sent to a server. If you reload or close the page while the timer is running, it comes back stopped at the time that was left, and you can click Resume.
Status labels
| Label | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Ready | Set up and waiting for Start |
| Running | Counting down |
| Stopped | Paused; Resume continues from the same time |
| Finished | Reached zero |
| Ended | Stopped early with the End button |
Tips
- The timer does not play a sound when it finishes, so keep the tab where you can see it.
- If all three boxes are zero, Start does nothing and Reset falls back to 25 minutes.
- Use Clear next to Recent Sessions to wipe the log.
- Need a countdown to a calendar date instead of a length of time? Use the Event Countdown tool.
Frequently asked questions
Can I pause and resume the timer?
Yes. Stop pauses the countdown and Resume continues from exactly where it stopped. The remaining time is also kept if you reload the page.
What is the longest countdown I can set?
Each box accepts two digits, so you can enter up to 99 hours, 99 minutes and 99 seconds. The tool adds them together into one countdown.
Where is my session history saved?
In your browser's local storage on this device. The tool keeps the 8 most recent finished or ended sessions. Clearing your browser data removes them.
