About this tool

Check how often each keyword appears in your text

This keyword density checker counts the words in the text you paste and lists the most frequent single words, 2-word phrases and 3-word phrases. For each one you see how many times it appears and what percentage of all words it makes up. Use it to check a draft before publishing, or to see whether copy reads as keyword-stuffed.

How to use it

  1. Paste your article or page copy into the Your text box (up to 200,000 characters).
  2. Leave Ignore common English stop words on to hide words such as "the", "and" and "with", or turn it off to count everything.
  3. Set the minimum word length to drop very short words from the single-word list.
  4. Switch between Single words, 2-word phrases and 3-word phrases. Each table shows the top 20.

How the numbers are calculated

Density is the number of times a word or phrase occurs divided by the total number of words in your text, shown as a percentage. Matching ignores upper and lower case. Words are split on anything that is not a letter, number or combining mark, so accented letters (café) and non-Latin scripts such as Urdu are counted correctly. An apostrophe inside a word, as in "don't", keeps it as one word.

  • Phrases are only listed if they appear at least twice.
  • With the stop-word filter on, a phrase cannot start or end with a stop word.
  • The minimum word length applies to single words only.
  • The stop-word list is English. Words in other languages are not filtered.

The 3% warning

If any single word is above 3% of your total words, the tool shows a warning and marks the figure in red. There is no official limit from search engines. The 3% mark is a practical rule of thumb for spotting copy that repeats one term unnaturally. Treat it as a prompt to reread the text, not as a pass or fail score.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good keyword density?

Search engines do not publish a target. Writing naturally for the reader usually keeps your main term well under a few percent. If the same word makes up more than about 3% of the text, check whether it sounds repetitive.

Does it work with languages other than English?

Counting works for any language that separates words with spaces, including Urdu and accented Latin text. Only the stop-word filter is English, so switch it off for other languages.

Is my text uploaded anywhere?

No. The analysis runs in your browser and nothing is sent to a server.

Why is my text cut off?

Input is limited to 200,000 characters so the page stays responsive. Split very long documents into parts.
