About this tool

Parse any user-agent string into readable parts

This user agent parser reads a browser user-agent string and shows the browser, operating system, device type, rendering engine and whether it belongs to a known bot. When the page opens, it fills in your own browser's user agent automatically, so it also answers "what is my user agent?". You can paste any other string, such as one from a server log, to see what sent the request.

How to use it

  1. Check the User Agent String box. It already holds your browser's user agent.
  2. Paste a different string to parse it instead. Results update as you type.
  3. Click a sample under Test with sample user agents to try Chrome, Firefox, Safari on iPhone, Edge, Samsung Internet or Googlebot.
  4. Click Use my browser UA to go back to your own string, or Clear to empty the box.
  5. Use Copy in the Raw User Agent panel to copy the full string.

How it works

The parser runs in your browser and matches the string against a set of patterns. Nothing is sent to a server. It reports six things:

FieldWhat it shows
BrowserChrome, Firefox, Safari, Edge, Opera, Samsung Internet or Internet Explorer, with the major version
Operating SystemWindows, macOS, iOS, iPadOS, Android, Chrome OS or Linux, with a version where the string has one
Device TypeDesktop, Mobile or Tablet
Rendering EngineBlink, WebKit, Gecko or Trident
Bot / CrawlerYes or No, with the matched bot name
UA LengthNumber of characters in the string

Order matters when detecting browsers, because many user agents mention several names. Edge and Opera strings also contain "Chrome", and Chrome strings contain "Safari", so the parser checks for the more specific names first. Bot detection covers about 20 common crawlers, including Googlebot, Bingbot, DuckDuckBot, YandexBot, Baiduspider, AhrefsBot, SemrushBot and social preview bots from Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, Pinterest and WhatsApp. A detected bot is highlighted at the top of the results.

Tips

  • Windows 10 and Windows 11 both report "Windows NT 10.0", so the tool shows 10/11. The user agent alone cannot tell them apart.
  • Only the major browser version is shown, for example Chrome 120 rather than 120.0.6099.
  • Browsers outside its list show as Unknown. Treat the result as a quick reading of the string, not proof of the real device.

Frequently asked questions

What is a user-agent string?

It is a line of text your browser sends with every web request. It names the browser, its version, the operating system and the engine, so servers can adapt their response.

Can this tool tell if a visit came from Googlebot?

It tells you if the string claims to be Googlebot or another known crawler. Any client can copy a bot's user agent, so confirming a real Googlebot visit needs a reverse DNS check of the IP address.

Is my user agent sent anywhere?

No. The tool reads your user agent from the browser and parses it with JavaScript on the page. Nothing is uploaded or stored.
