About this tool

Create Markdown tables without counting pipes

This Markdown table generator lets you fill in a table in a simple grid and copies it out as clean Markdown. You type headers and cells like a spreadsheet, choose an alignment for each column, and the Markdown is written for you as you type. It works for README files, GitHub issues, docs sites and any editor that supports GitHub-style tables. Everything runs in your browser.

How to use it

  1. Start with the default 3 × 3 grid. Use + Col, − Col, + Row and − Row to resize it.
  2. Type a name in each header box. They start as Column 1, Column 2 and so on.
  3. Pick left, center or right under each header.
  4. Fill in the cells. The Markdown Output box updates on every keystroke.
  5. Click Copy and paste the table into your file.

How it works

The tool writes a header row, a separator row and one line per data row. Each column is padded with spaces to the width of its longest value, with a minimum of three characters, so the raw Markdown lines up neatly in a text editor. The separator row sets the alignment:

AlignmentSeparatorPadding in the source
left:---Text, then spaces
center:---:Spaces on both sides
right---:Spaces, then text

A small example of the output:

| Name | Qty |
| :---- | --: |
| Apple | 3 |

The remove buttons always take away the last column or the last row, and the grid keeps at least one of each. Empty cells are allowed and stay blank in the output.

Tips

  • A pipe character (|) inside a cell will split it into two columns. Type \| instead.
  • You can use inline Markdown in cells, such as **bold**, `code` or links. It is copied as typed.
  • Removing a column or row deletes its content, so copy your table first if you are unsure.

Frequently asked questions

Will this table work on GitHub?

Yes. The output uses the standard pipe table syntax that GitHub, GitLab and most Markdown editors support.

Can I paste a CSV or spreadsheet into it?

No. There is no import option. You type values into the grid cell by cell.

Why is there a colon in my left-aligned column?

The tool writes left alignment as :---. It looks the same as plain --- on most sites, because tables align left by default.
