About this tool

Build a tracked campaign link

This UTM link builder adds campaign tracking parameters to a web address so Google Analytics and similar tools can tell where your visitors came from. Fill in the fields and the finished link updates as you type, ready to copy into an email, ad or social post.

How to use it

  1. Enter the page's address in Website URL. If you leave out http or https, https is assumed.
  2. Fill in Source (where the link is placed, such as google or newsletter), Medium (such as cpc or email) and Campaign name.
  3. Optionally add Term (paid keyword) and Content (to tell two links in the same campaign apart).
  4. Use Add custom parameter for any other query parameter you need.
  5. Click Copy link.

What the tool does to your URL

  • Only http and https addresses are accepted; anything else shows an error.
  • An existing query string is kept. If the URL already has a parameter with the same name, such as utm_source, it is replaced rather than duplicated.
  • A #fragment stays at the end of the link, after the parameters.
  • Values are URL-encoded. Spaces become %20, and characters such as &, = and accented letters are escaped so they cannot break the query string.
  • Empty fields are left out.

Warnings

The tool warns when a value contains spaces or capital letters. Analytics reports treat "Email" and "email" as two separate values, which splits your data. It also reminds you when source, medium or campaign is missing, because Google Analytics expects all three. The preset buttons (google, facebook, instagram, linkedin, twitter, newsletter, youtube, bing) fill the source field in one click.

Frequently asked questions

Which UTM parameters are required?

Google Analytics expects utm_source, utm_medium and utm_campaign. utm_term and utm_content are optional.

Can I use UTM links on my own internal links?

It is better not to. A UTM click starts a new tracked session and can overwrite the original traffic source. Use them on links that come from outside your site.

Does the tool shorten the link?

No. It only builds the full URL. Use a separate shortener if you need a shorter link.

Is my URL sent anywhere?

No. The link is built in your browser.
