About this tool

Find dead links on any web page

The broken link finder opens a page, collects the links on it and checks each one. You get a list of the links that no longer work, with the HTTP status and the anchor text. For each broken link you can copy a short outreach email, which is the core of broken link building.

How to use it

  1. Enter the Page URL you want to check, for example a resources or "useful links" page.
  2. Choose which links to check: External links (the default), Internal links or All links.
  3. Optionally add your replacement URL, a page of yours on the same topic. It is added to the email.
  4. Press Find broken links. The results show the number of links checked, broken, could not verify and working.
  5. Use Copy outreach email under a broken link, or Copy broken links to copy the whole list.

What the statuses mean

ResultMeaning
BrokenThe server answered with an error such as 404 or 410, or the domain does not exist.
WorkingThe link answered with a normal status. A link that redirects to another page also counts as working.
Could not verifyThe site refused our checker (401, 403 or 429), took longer than 8 seconds, or could not be fetched from a public address. Open these links yourself before you report them.

What gets checked

  • Links are read from the page's HTML. Links added later by JavaScript are not seen.
  • Each link is checked once, even if it appears several times. Links to a section of the same page (#top), mailto: and tel: links are skipped.
  • Up to 60 links are checked per run. If the page has more, the tool tells you how many it skipped.
  • It checks one page at a time. It does not crawl a whole site.
  • A page that returns a 200 status but shows "page not found" text (a soft 404) is counted as working.

Using it for broken link building

Broken link building means finding a dead link on someone else's page and offering your own page as the replacement. A simple way to do it:

  1. Pick a page on your topic that links out to many resources, such as a guide or a list of tools.
  2. Run it through the finder with External links selected.
  3. If one of the broken links was about something you have written about, add your page as the replacement URL.
  4. Copy the email, add your name and send it to the site owner.

The email the tool writes looks like this:

Subject: Broken link on https://example.com/resources

Hi,

While reading https://example.com/resources I noticed a link that no longer works: https://old-site.com/guide
It is the link with the text "Beginner's guide" and it returns: HTTP 404.

If you are looking for a replacement, this page covers the same topic: https://your-site.com/guide

Hope that helps.

Best regards,
[Your name]

Only suggest your page if it really fits the topic. The owner decides whether to add a link, and nothing is guaranteed.

Privacy

The page and its links are fetched from our server, not from your browser, so the URL you enter is sent to it. Only public http and https addresses can be checked.

Frequently asked questions

How do I find broken links on a web page?

Enter the page URL and press Find broken links. The tool checks every link it finds on that page and lists the ones that return an error or a missing domain.

Why does a link show "Could not verify"?

Some sites block automated checkers with a 401, 403 or 429 reply, and others are slow or not reachable from a public address. The link may work fine in your browser, so open it yourself before you count it as broken.

Does it check my whole website?

No. It checks the links on one page per run, up to 60 links. To check another page, enter its URL.

Does a redirected link count as broken?

No. If a link redirects to a page that answers normally, it counts as working, even if the new page is not the one the link used to show.

Does the tool send the emails for me?

No. It only writes the email text for you to copy. You add your name and send it yourself.

Why are some links on the page missing from the results?

The tool reads the HTML the server sends, so links that a script adds after the page loads are not included. Links to a section of the same page, mailto: and tel: links are skipped on purpose.
